Pharmacies cannot afford to install solar panels for medical storage, leading to a shortage of essential medications. The Sudan Doctors’ Network warns that continued electricity cuts could impact patients in hospitals, particularly those requiring constant care.

The World Bank estimates that at least 30% of Sudan’s population has no access to electricity, with rural areas bearing the brunt. Power outages reaching up to 16 hours are common in many parts of the country, even in grid-connected urban centers.

Sudan’s solar revolution highlights a broader pattern: conflict and instability can create opportunities for innovation but also exacerbate existing inequalities. The high cost of imported solar systems has created a two-tiered system, where those who can afford it have access to clean energy while others are left without.
